What Is the Average Age and Income of Home Buyers in the U.S.?

The average age of a home buyer in the United States is 47 years old and the U.S. average home buyer income is $96,500. This is the national average for a home buyer in all metro areas, not just the 50 major metro areas included in our study. How does the national average age and income of home buyers compare to that of the largest metro areas in the country? Just six of the 50 had an average age of 47 or higher, which shows that younger people are more likely to buy a home in a large metro area, while older home buyers may be looking to smaller cities.

Where Are Home Buyers the Youngest or the Oldest?

The youngest home buyers are those in the Buffalo-Cheektowaga-Niagara Falls metro area of New York, with an average home buyer age of 35. Those home-buying in this area also had one of the lower average incomes, at $71,919. Why are so many young people moving to the Buffalo, NY, area? One factor that may have come into play is a program the state offers to help college graduates buy a home in upstate New York cities like Buffalo.

The oldest home buyers are in Florida, with the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro area at the top of the list with an average home buyer age of 53. Two other Florida metro areas were also found in the top four, with an average home buyer age of 51 years old in the Orlando and Miami areas.

What Is the Average Age and Income of Home Sellers in the US?

The average age of a home seller in the United States is 55 years old and the average home seller income is $99,000. How does the U.S. average age and income of a home seller compare to the age and income of those in the largest metro areas? Surprisingly, none of the 50 metros had an average seller age of 55 or older; the oldest average was 54. Again, this statistic shows that younger people tend to live in bigger cities and metros, keeping the ages lower than the national average.

Where Are Home Sellers the Youngest or the Oldest?

The youngest home sellers were found to be located in the Minneapolis and Salt Lake City metro areas, with an average home seller age of 44 years old. Northern metro areas surrounding the Great Lakes were found to have the second youngest home sellers, at 45 years of age, including Columbus, OH, Pittsburgh, PA, and Milwaukee, WI. The Buffalo metro area was also found to have some of the youngest home sellers, in addition to the youngest home buyers, with an average age of 45 years old.

Florida is home to the oldest home sellers as well as the oldest home buyers. The average age of home sellers in Tampa was found to be 54, while the age of home sellers in the Orlando area averages 53 years. This comes as no surprise seeing as Florida has one of the oldest populations in the United States, with 21.3% of the population over the age of 65.
